  • What is the validity of the JHSC certification?

Certificates of completion are valid for three years.

  • What is a joint health and safety committee?

A Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) is a group of employees, including some without management duties, working together to ensure workplace safety and worker's health as well as well-being.

  • Why do we need a joint health and safety committee established?

A Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) is essential to support the internal responsibility system and ensure its effective operation. This is achieved through activities like inspections, investigations, consultations, and making recommendations.

  • When must a joint health and safety committee be established?

All workplaces with 20 or more workers (full-time and part-time) must have a joint committee. WorkSafeBC may also order the establishment of a joint committee in any other workplace.

  • Do workplaces with fewer than 20 workers still need to establish a joint health and safety committee

If you employ less than 20 workers, you are only required to have a Worker Health & Safety Representative, and not a full JHSC.

However, this individual still needs to complete a mandatory training.

  • Who must take the joint health and safety committee training?

Members of Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees, or worker health and safety representatives, must receive the mandatory eight hours of training, within the first six months of taking on their new role.

  • Who would benefit from this joint health and safety committee training?

This joint health and safety training is ideal for new safety committee members or existing members seeking recertification or skill enhancement.

It's also beneficial if your organization is establishing its first safety committee or aims to improve its current committee's effectiveness. This training is valuable regardless of the industry you work in

  • Is the JHSC certification tied to the employer or the individual?

Certification is tied to the employer, not the individual. If a person changes workplaces, they need to get re-certified under the new employer or when joining a new committee.
